Described as the “World’s Premier Female DJ” by the Grammy Foundation, Shortee’s pioneering spirit, inspiring talent and long resume of accomplishments are enough to spark awed envy in any DJ, gender aside.
Named “Queen of the Scratch World” by DJ Times and the “#1 Female EDM DJ” by Miami New Times, Shortee is a Multi-Genre DJ, Turntablist, Music Producer, Record Label CEO, Actor, Voice Over Artist, DJ Instructor, and Published Author. Her unique contribution to the art of DJing earned her a spot as the only female DJ featured in Doug Pray’s critically acclaimed documentary, “SCRATCH“.
There are few DJs that are truly respected globally in such a wide variety of genres like Shortee. She spins everything from Drum and Bass, Glitch Hop, Trap, Electro House, Dubstep, Drumstep, Breaks, Rock, Funk, Hip Hop, Top40 and Open-Format. Her fast paced mixing style, expert scratching skills and energetic stage presence has made her one of the most in demand DJs touring in North America, South America, Central America, Europe, Asia, Africa, and the Middle East.
From underground massives to high profile events, Shortee has performed for corporate giants such as New Line Cinemas, Tiffany, Sprite, Frito Lay, Activision and was the official Playboy 50th Anniversary Club Tour DJ. She has also shared the stage alongside world class artists such as KRS One, Method Man, Andy C, Craze, Q-bert, Z-Trip, The Roots and countless others. She was the opening act of the first and widely popular Pendulum Live Tour and has DJed for Bahamadia and legendary Hip Hop pioneer Roxanne Shante of the Juice Crew fame (Biz Markie, Marley Marl, Big Daddy Kane etc).
In addition to being a veteran globetrotter, Shortee became the first female Fever-Buzz Battle of the DJs Champion in 1997 and the first female PowerMixer ever to rock the airwaves of LA’s #1 Hip Hop Station, Power 106fm circa 2006. She’s also made the rounds on the silver screen, starring in an a number of documentary movies as well as TV appearances including NBC’s “Hip Hop Nation”, The Tyra Banks Show, The Arsenio Hall Show and commercials such as Sony PSP and Toyota.
Aside from appearing as DJ Shortee, she’s been credited as actress Shannon Ames, portraying various fictional characters in Films, Televisions, Web Series and live Theatre productions. She has been recognized for her for her work as an actor including the “Outstanding Acting Performance” Award” at the ZedFest Film Festival for her performance in the role of “Marnie” in the suspense thriller “The Long Way Home“.
Making her production debut in 1998, Shortee appeared on Faust’s critically lauded “Man or Myth”, the first turntablist album ever released. The following year, Shortee’s full length solo debut “The Dreamer” became the first and only turntablist album produced by a female. Shortee has since produced multiple albums, singles, eps, battle records, remixes, appeared on numerous compilations and released a ton of DJ mixes.
Her ground-breaking female-centric DJ tools album “Bikini Wax”, co-produced with fellow female DJ Step One in 2006, became the first and only battle record ever produced by women and the only record of it’s kind with battle phrases created specifically for females to use in their DJ routines. Her skills as a DJ & Producer have earned her acclaim in countless publications including Rolling Stone, Spin, DJ Times, Urb, Remix, Magnetic as well as music licensing features airing on networks such as NBC, ESPN, CNN, MTV & HBO.
In addition to being a solo artist, she produces alongside her husband DJ Faust as “Urban Assault“. In 2006, the duo launched their first two record labels: 5 Star Records (Hip Hop | DJ Tools) and Heavy Artillery Recordings (Dubstep | Drum & Bass | Drumstep | Glitch Hop | Trap). In 2008, their single “Away” was nominated for best jungle/dnb track at the International Dance Music Awards. In 2009 Urban Assault’s infamous “Red Raider” EP not only held the #1 spot on both Beatport & TrackItDown, it was also honored by TrackItDown’s Drum & Bass Awards as one of the top 10 releases of the year alongside artists such as Subfocus, Deadmau5, Chase & Status and The Prodigy.
In 2013, the couple was honored with Symphonic Distribution’s ‘Best DJ/Production Duo’ Award and their influential Heavy Artillery Recordings imprint, which has licensed music to blockbuster films such as “Elysium” with Matt Damon & Jodi Foster, has made such a lasting mark on the global electronic music scene that it has won Symphonic Distribution’s Awards for “Hardest Working Label” and “Label of the Year”. Continuing to contribute quality music to the EDM landscape, Shortee and Faust launched their third record label “Arkade Records” catering exclusively to the Electro House genre.
Four years as a head professor at The Scratch DJ Academy co-founded by RUN DMC’s Jam Master Jay, Shortee has also taught DJ courses for the esteemed Grammy Foundation, the Beat Junkie Institute of Sound and Dubspot. She’s also toured the world teaching DJ gear seminars for Rane and Serato and has taught workshops for the Berklee College of Music, SAE Institute, Channel One News, and Sprite.
In addition to her in-person classes, Shortee has produced a series of instructional DVDs and has also created online courses for Turntable U . In 2012 she became the first & only female DJ to write an instructional book on DJing entitled “Spin Now! The DJ Starter Handbook” (Hal Leonard Publishing Co.) which is currently available worldwide in paperback and kindle editions.
